Manager, Events and Member Engagement

The Business Council of British Columbia (BCBC) is seeking a creative and detail-oriented individual to lead the Council’s dynamic events and member engagement activities.

BCBC is the place where leaders meet to unlock B.C.’s full potential and we are recognized for our high impact events and convening strengths to advance solutions that enhance British Columbians’ social and economic prosperity.

Each year, we present dozens of events ranging from intimate roundtables to major conferences. We have hosted national and global leaders including Microsoft Founder, Bill Gates, and President, Brad Smith, the Global Chairman and CEO of GE, the CEO of RBC, journalist Chantal Hebert, the head of Shell Canada, academics, not-for-profit leaders and global climate champions like the U.K.’s Nigel Topping. Our events also engage public officials including Premiers, Prime Ministers, Federal and Provincial cabinet ministers, Indigenous leaders, and Canadian and foreign diplomats.

The Events and Member Engagement Manager will lead the full spectrum of BCBC’s events and engagement program and work with key partners, in particular our 200+ member companies which include the largest and leading private sector enterprises, as well as major post-secondary institutions, crown corporations and other industry associations from across British Columbia.

Reporting to the SVP Public Affairs & Communications, the Events and Member Engagement Manager will be an integral part of the organization’s communications team delivering tactical activities while simultaneously contributing to the strategic communications goals and activities of BCBC. The Manager will be expected to collaborate across the organization, working directly with the President and CEO and members of the executive daily.

Responsibilities include:

  • Planning and execution of all BCBC virtual and in-person events, forums and in-camera roundtables including:
    • Coordinating content development, managing speaker outreach and coordination, sponsorship fulfillment, developing event marketing and related materials and working with external suppliers including contractors, venues and AV companies as necessary.
    • Projects for 2022 include an ESG roundtable series, Leaders’ Exchange series, Annual General Meeting, Indigenous Economic Reconciliation Forum, tours with elected officials, and major conferences, including the 2022 Cascadia Innovation Corridor Conference and B.C. Business Summit.
  • Managing the NEXT Leaders Council (NLC) events, meetings, outreach and activities:
    • Engaging with NLC members and millennial leaders to connect their perspectives with the work and events of the Business Council.
    • Projects for 2022 include monthly member roundtables with guest speakers and regular member surveys on priority topics of interest related to economic and social prosperity.
  • Writing and preparing member communications to support member engagement with BCBC’s policy content.
  • Working with senior business leaders to share their individual and organizations’ stories and perspectives on opportunities here in British Columbia.
  • Contributing to the maintenance of the Council’s corporate communications and events calendar.

Qualifications and attributes:

  • Completed a related post-secondary undergraduate degree
  • 3-5 years of professional events and communications experience
  • Self-starter with exceptional written and oral English language skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications as well as an understanding of emerging digital communications tools and an ability to work in Adobe Creative Suite (including InDesign)
  • Professional, highly organized and detail oriented with the ability to multitask and meet deadlines
  • Friendly, collaborative team player with the ability to work in a small office environment
  • Ability to manage external suppliers and work with high profile executives and senior leaders
  • General knowledge of, or interest in, the B.C. economy and public policy landscape would be an asset.
