Forestry is the No. 1 engine that drives B.C.’s economy, said Ken Peacock, chief economist of the Business Council of B.C., citing nearly $15 billion in annual exports.
While other sectors may employ more people or produce more GDP, Peacock believes forestry is the top driver because it leads in exports, which are important because they spread B.C. goods far and wide.
The Business Council of B.C. has trimmed its 2019 economic forecast — from 2.2 per cent growth down to 2 per cent growth — in part because of the forestry downturn.
