Greg D’Avignon, president of the Business Council of B.C., said while his organization was having difficulty making the plan’s numbers add up, it nonetheless supported the broad intent. “We’re pleased with the government that it’s taken some of our advice,” he said, highlighting programs for skills retraining and re-credentialing for unemployed workers.

Even the $300 million grant program, with its unclear rules for eligibility, is understandable, he said.

“The challenge, as you well know, is they don’t want to throw good money after bad, which I fully agree with,” said D’Avignon. “If a company was going to fail regardless, why provide more money just to keep it on life support?”
