BCBC Statement following BC Supreme Court Ruling on TMX
Certainty of process is fundamental in any democracy
May 24, 2018 (Vancouver, B.C.) - Greg D'Avignon, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Business Council of British Columbia issued the following statement following today's BC Supreme Court rulings related to the Trans Mountain Pipeline Project:
"Today, the BC Supreme Court validated British Columbia's environmental assessment process as applied to the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion project, which was granted conditional approval following years of multiple and thorough reviews, scientific analysis and meaningful community consultation.
"It is past time that governments at all levels stop placing new, unwarranted barriers in front of this project and follow the rule of law as established by their own statutes and regulatory processes. The unintended consequences of these actions are undermining Canada's reputation as a place to do business, leading to uncertainty of future job creation and an overall declining confidence in Canada among large and small businesses and local and international investors.
"Certainty of process is fundamental in any democracy. The Business Council continues to urge the federal and provincial governments to adhere to and support all regulatory processes they have established.
"Today, this process has been validated by the courts, and so governments must urgently provide the certainty required for the construction to proceed of a project deemed to be in the national interest. A failure to do so will further erode our reputation as a place to do business and create economic opportunity in an environmentally sustainable and responsible manner."
